UCS Releases Report on Water Use by
U.S. Power Plants
Source: Union of Concerned Scientists
The Union of Concerned Scientists (USC)
has
released the first systematic report of how power
plant cooling affects freshwater resources in the
United States. The report, Freshwater Use by U.S.
Power Plants: Electricity’s Thirst for a Precious
Resource, examines power plant effects on water
supply and demand and certain water quality
concerns, such as water temperature. In addition,
the report shows how data gaps and inaccuracies in
the 2008 federal data have caused subsequent
analyses to overlook regions that are facing water
stress.
Overall, the report advocates
for improving
reporting so that decision-makers have better
information, recommends that the decision-makers
diligently use such information along with good
information on water stress in their areas, and urges
implementation of more water-smart energy
technologies.
